The Designer
Hanna Stína

Hanna Stína is an Icelandic interior architect and designer who established her independent practice in Reykjavík in 2003, following her studies in Florence and Milan. Over more than two decades, she has designed private homes, hotels, restaurants, workplaces and countryside retreats. Her work brings together an expressive use of colour, rich textures and carefully balanced materials, with bespoke furniture and joinery often central to the interior.

Her approach is both personal and practical. Each project develops through close collaboration with clients, considering the character of the building, the atmosphere they want to create and how the space will be used. She leads projects from initial layouts and concepts through detailed design and completion, working alongside contractors, craftspeople and specialist suppliers. In 2024, she also hosted an Icelandic television series focused on interiors and home transformations.

My approach

Each project is different, but my approach remains consistent: creating interiors with character, choosing materials with care and working closely with the people who bring the design to life.

Character

I want each interior to have its own identity. My starting point is the building and the people who use it: what they are drawn to, how they live or work, and what they want the space to become. Colour, proportion, art and furniture help shape that identity. I enjoy bringing unexpected elements together, finding a balance that feels natural to the project.

Materials and detail

Materials are often where a design begins to take shape for me. The movement of marble, the grain of timber or the texture of a fabric can suggest the direction for an entire room. I consider how these elements work together, how they feel and how they will wear. Bespoke furniture and joinery allow me to develop those ideas into something particular to the space.

Collaboration

Understanding my clients is an essential part of the work. I listen, ask questions and develop ideas with them, balancing their priorities with the possibilities of the space. As the project progresses, I work closely with contractors, craftspeople and suppliers, staying involved in the details and decisions on site that shape the finished interior.
